Swimming Lessons


One session of swimming lessons are provided for free for member's children. An additional session may be purchased for an additional fee.


Lesson Levels

Six levels of swim instruction are provided.

Level One:

Water Entry/Exit:

___ Submerge mouth, nose and eyes, independently

___ Blow bubbles through mouth and nose, 3 sec.

___ Open eyes underwater, pick up submerged object, 2 times

Buoyancy on Front/Back:

___ Float on front and back, with support for 5 sec.

___ Recover from a front/back float to a standing position

Changing Direction/Position:

___ Change direction of travel while walking/paddling

___ Roll over from front/back and back/front with support

Swim on Front/Back/Side:

___ Alternating arm action on front/back with support, 5ft

___ Simultaneous arm action on front/back with support, 5ft

___ Alternating leg action on front/back with support, 5ft

___ Simultaneous leg action on front/back with support, 5ft

___ Combined stroke on front/back with support, 5ft

Level Two:

Water Entry/Exit:

___ Enter water by stepping or jumping from the side

___ Exit water safely using ladder or side

Breath Control/Underwater Swimming:

___ Open eyes underwater, pick up a submerged object

___ Submerge entire head, 5 sec

___ Blow bubbles with bobs, 5 times

Buoyancy on Front/Back:

___ Float on front/back unsupported, 5 sec

___ Recover from a front/back float to a standing position

___ Front/back glide

Changing Direction/Position:

___ Roll over from front/back, back/front unsupported

___ Change direction of travel paddling on front/back

Swim on Front/Back/Side:

___ Combine stroke on front/back unsupported, 15ft

___ Finning arm action, 10ft

___ Sculling arm action, 10ft

___ Swim on side alternating leg action with support, 5ft

___ Swim on side simultaneous leg action with support, 5ft

___ Tread water using arm and leg motions

Level Three:

Water Entry/Exit:

___ Jump into deep water from the side without floatation

___ Dive from side sitting or kneeling position in 9 ft. deep water

Breath Control/Underwater Swimming:

___ Bob fully submerged in chest-deep water, 5 times

___ Fully submerge and retrieve object

___ Rotary breathing with the body in a horizontal position, 5 times

Buoyancy on Front/Back:

___ Perform front/back glide with 2 different kicks for 2 body lengths

___ Survival float, 30 sec

___ Back float, 30 sec

Changing Direction/Position:

___ Change from horizontal to vertical position on front/back

Swim on Front/Back/Side:

___ Perform front and back crawl, 15 yards

___ Butterfly-kick and body motion, 15 ft.

General/Personal Water Safety:

___ Tread water using sculling arm motions and kicks, 1 min

Level Four:

Water Entry/Exit:

___ Perform Shallow dive or dive from compact or stride position

Breath Control/Underwater Swimming:

___ Swim underwater, 3 body lengths

___ Perform feet first surface dive

Buoyancy on Front/Back:

___ Survival and back float in deep water, 1 min

Changing Direction/Position:

___ Perform open turns on front and back using any stroke

Swim on Front/Back/Side:

___ Perform front crawl, 25 yards

___ Perform back crawl, 25 yards

___ Perform butterfly, 15yards

___ Perform breaststroke, 15 yards

___ Perform elementary backstroke, 15 yards

___ Perform sidestroke, 15 yards

General/Personal Water Safety:

___ Tread water using sculling arm motions and kicks, 1 min.

Level Five:

Water Entry/Exit:

___ Shallow dive, glide two body lengths and begin any front stroke

Breath Control/Underwater Swimming:

___ Swim underwater, 15 yards

___ Perform pike and tuck surface dives submerging completely

Buoyancy on Front/Back:

___ Survival and back float, 2 min

Changing Direction/Position:

___ Front flip turn

___ Backstroke flip turn

Swim on Front/Back/Side:

___ Perform front crawl, 50 yards

___ Perform back crawl, 50 yards

___ Perform butterfly, 25 yards

___ Perform breaststroke, 25 yards

___ Perform elementary backstroke, 25 yards

___ Perform sidestroke, 25 yards

General/Personal Water Safety:

___ Tread water with two different kicks, 2 min

___ Learn survival swimming, 2 min

Level Six:

Endurance Skills:

___ Front crawl, 100 yards

___ Back crawl, 100 yards

___ Breaststroke, 50 yards

___ Elementary backstroke, 50 yards

___ Sidestroke, 50 yards

___ Butterfly, 50 yards

___ 500 yard continuous swim

Turns:

___ Front crawl open turn

___ Sidestroke open turn

___ Backstroke open turn

___ Front flip turn

___ Breaststroke turn

___ Butterfly turn

___ Backstroke turn

Skills:

___ Feet-first surface dive

___ Pike and Tuck surface dive

___ Dive from side from stride and standing positions

___ Tread water in deep water, 5 min
